That burl overlay!!! What figure! And of course you carved the pillow headstock in such a way as to maximize its drama. Masterful.

I am sorry I never could visit you there, as much as I would have liked to, but hopefully some day in the new one.
As Covid also prevented me being at BIG now, I console myself with a Greta unlimited that keeps on opening up and sounds incredible.
Best of luck for the transition and the new start!
Thanks Lonzo! I’m glad the Greta has worked out well for you! This Greta is one of the last two New Hampshire guitars. The Old Town 00 guitar is the other one. I’ll be stringing that one up for the first time this week.
I hope when pandemics allow you can make it out for a visit at my new shop. It’s less than an hour from Burlington airport. Central Vermont is a beautiful area!

Thanks Erithon and thanks for noticing the focus on the sculpted burl headstock.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Desert Ironwood is the most beautiful wood in the world!

Default Wrapping up in New Hampshire

As I am wrapping up here in New Hampshire. I have the Old Town Farm 00 Guitar strung up and almost set for delivery. This will be the last guitar out of my Peterborough NH shop.

This is old growth tri-colored Western Red Cedar driftwood on a Bocote back and sides. The neck is a Honduran Mahogany. The bridge, fretboard, arm bevel, and most of the trim is Desert Ironwood. The rosette and truss rod cover are Bloodwood. Finally the headstock overlay is a mildly curly Applewood taken from a very old Apple tree that stood on the family farm called Old Town Farm:

Default Stone Rosette

I've been working away setting up my new Vermont studio. I am at the point where I have started a guitar. I usually have a number of guitars going in different stages but I got all caught up before the move so instead of sharing time with other guitars I am using this build to help me fine tune how the studio is set up.

I haven't posted in awhile so I'd thought I'd show you something new that I haven't done before. I am using stone in the rosette. Fortunately for me I just moved in next door to a couple of professional stone workers/artists. they have been very helpful!

Here is the stone I am using in the rough:

It is Lapis Lazuli which is known for it's beautiful blue color. A little spritz of water brings that out:

Here it is set in the rosette bordered in Myrtle and blue Pau abalone edged with black and white purfling:

The rosette getting set into the top:

It is set into a tunnel 13 Redwood soundboard:

Thanks for viewing!
Mark

Welcome back Mark, that is quite an amazing rosette. Worth whatever effort it took to work with the stone. It is beautiful.

Really nice looking Rosette Mark. How difficult was it working with stone (lapiz) compared to other materials? Good luck with setting up in your new work space.

Thanks Tom, I think we will be seeing more stone in future work. There are colors in stone that wood just doesn't come in.

Thanks Paul. We are very thrilled to be here! My shop is working out very well. The last big thing I have to do is hang a ceiling. Currently I'm using all of my photography lights to work and a couple existing bare light bulbs. Building a guitar helps me settle where the benches are which I need to know before I start locating the down lights that will be in that ceiling.

That is hard to answer. I've been making rosettes with wood, shell and bone for 20 years now and this is my first one with stone. Ask me in twenty years
