Chord Melody's v. Classical Fingerstyle
I have been playing my guitar using chord melodies from books by Mike Lynch for Ukulele. Thumb only for chord melody.Using only the top four strings. I also have tried to play the same songs finterpicking the same notes I was strumming. Thumb on strings 6, 5, 4, and fingers on the top three strings classical style. Which is best? I assume both are correct techniques. I also use drop D a lot and let strings 5 and 6 drone. Should I rearrange the songs with different notes for one style or the other or is playing the same notes alright? What do others do? I need opinions, suggestions, ideas. I have found that some songs when fingerpicked sound better with less notes and also some songs sound better played one way or the other. Please tell me what you think. How do you do it?

Things are not mutually exclusive. You can mix elements of various styles in the same piece of music if done tastefully.
Learn a few fingerstyle tunes from tab (or score if you can read scores) note for note so that you can see how various fingerstyle arrangements go.

No best overall, maybe just "best" for certain situations.
They have a different sound to your ear, no? Both are useful. |

You answered your own question: ". . .some songs sound better played one way or the other. "
Which also depends on whether you're singing or accompanying, or not. |
