Default The 24 year old genius....

Of Elton John.

For those of you who were too young - some of his best work from one of his best albums. The BBC concerts from this era are such a treasure

This may well be my favorite tune of his of all time....the studio version with the strings is outstanding too.

There’s also a sleeper earlier LP of his…a soundtrack he did for the movie “Friends”
Tiltle track is very good as is the rest of the album and the movie about two very young people a English boy and his French girlfriend who runaway together was good too..

Did you ever hear what Elton's opinion of it was? I can't repeat it here on the forum!

This is timely for me. I'm working up a fingerstyle arrangement of Rocket Man. Thanks for posting.

And I just put “Friends” into my set list! Something about his delivery in that song that is so genuine. Rocket Man is a big crowd pleaser. Everyone loves that song.

The Yellow Brick Road tour made a stop at Olympia in Detroit. What a killer show!!
As I remember he made four costume changes that night.

Saw him at the Silverdome (with 89k in attendance) July of '76 and he came onstage like this:

I remember the account of the time surrounding some of his recording sessions. Bernie Taupin would hand him a sheet of lyrics at supper and he'd take it back to his room for the night. The next morning he would come down to breakfast with his arrangement in his head and by supper they would have the tracks recorded for the song. And the cycle would start again.

Kind of a trifecta (and three in a row) for me: Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across the Water and Honky Chatetau.

I’d go Tumbleweed Connection, Honky Chateau, and Captain Fantastic for my trio - with Tumbleweed on top of the pile if I could only have one

They were incredibly prolific - If I remember correctly for a few years they were under contract for two albums a year.

A couple weeks ago I sat and listened critically to the first few albums - one thing that really stood out was how incredibly well recorded they were.

One that stood out in that respect was one of his "sleeper" albums - Blue Moves. It's always been a favorite (even some great instrumentals!) but the recording is simply incredible!

Another is Caribou - Ticking alone is worth the price of admission.

One of the main ingredients in the production of his many albums are as Gus Dudgeon. He had a pristine style about his approach to production. He even produced the live album 11/17/70, one of my favorites next to the Elton John Lp, Madman, Tumbleweed and of course the incomparable Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.
