Good songs for crosspicker beginner
Friends, I heard the sounds of crosspicking come from a nearby rabbit hole, and, of course, had to jump in. Well, who wouldn't. It was a from a vid made by Mollie Tuttle playing Wildwood Flower. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHT4...el=GuitarWorld. Turns out that she is a fine teacher, and, with a few hours of work, I have got the feeling of crosspicking in my head, even if the song is still a bit choppy. But doable, which is always the key to progress.
Funny, but I have been focusing on fingerstyle for the past year or so (this is my third year playing), and the crosspicking technique fired some of the same synapses - with a melody line surrounded by moving garnish. I have a pretty limited repertoire, in general, and would be obliged for the names of tunes that I could learn without too much difficulty, and then play in a crosspicking fashion. I am thinking of "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Me and "Buddies in the Saddle" as candidates. Have not yet tried them, because I am not done yet with "Wildwood," and I have learned it is best to date one song at a time. Any other general suggestions regarding crosspicking would be much appreciated as well. Thanks David

The one book I have used is Guitar Pickers Fake Book. It has a large collection of 250 flatpicking songs. There is used one on Ebay for $5. The nice thing about the tunes in the book, the tabs are legible. A lot of books, the tabs fret numbers are so small plus the fret numbers are placed right on top of the strings. This makes it hard to see these tabs for us older people, and I have 20/20 vision.

Well, one thing I would suggest is that you begin to incorporate crosspicking into all the songs you play with a flatpick... even if you're just sitting and playing a bit, get used to the feel of skipping strings, jumping back and forth.
It really is a learned technique, and the more you do it and feel comfortable with it, the easier it will be to adapt it to whatever you choose. If you are leaning towards traditional old-time tunes, then just go ahead and pick (!) one and have at it! Doesn't seem like something you would need special books for...

Any Carter Family song is good to practice with - just play the bass melody as usual, then crosspick over the rest of the bar that is normally strummed.
This Land is Your Land lends itself well to that, too. |

Music with Ryan
https://musicwithryan.com/all-video-lessons is a very good starting point. Cross picking, flat picking and finger style. All his content is good, some of it is great. |
