One idea is, rather than trying to learn chord melody as a style, is to focus on the songs you want to play and find arrangements that you like-either transcribed, youtube, whatever. Easy to find all kinds of arrangements. If the arrangements you like have voice leading of the melody notes within chords, guess what-it's chord melody. Once you learn a few tunes, if you want, you can analyze them harmonically.
