Default Great Combo

I bought a 1980 Deluxe Reverb 3 years ago.I replaced the gutless Weber Signature with a Vox Celestion Blue from the mid 60s.A friend who was David Lindley's driver and tour guide said Lindley put these speakers into his amps. The friend had about a dozen of these vintage speakers and gave me the 50% off friend deal.
It improved the sound immensely.
A year before this, I bought a MIM Jazzmaster from the local Craigslist. The asking price was $500. Since it came without a case or whammy bar I talked it down to $450.
The Guitar developed an odd vibration/buzz.
I thought it was the bridge or whammy assembly. Stuffed foam under the strings and nothing happened.
Turns out the truss rod is defective.Tapping.on the back of the neck from the nut to 5th fret gets a noise from the rod.
Arghhhh!
I just ignore it and have figured out how to mask it.

The Jazzmaster and DR make a great pair for what I call Freshwater Surf Music. I put together a number of songs with these names:
Blue Gill
Wooly Bugger
Fish Sandwich
Poseidon's Misadventure
Lagrimas Del Rio
Mepps Tigerfly
Mepps #8
My inspirations are the Ventures, Mermen, and Frank Zappa from the early to mid 60s.

This sounds like fun. I can imagine a Celestion Blue sounds great in a good Deluxe Reverb!

Awesome! Good for you Matthew!

Love a Jazzmaster into a Fender amp myself.

I'm weird. My newest Jazzmaster (a Squier with the requisite vintage style circuit, vibrato, pickups, etc from the vintage vibe line). has some noises from the vibrato. My JMascis Jazzmaster has none of that. I've actually like the colors the extra noises put into things.

I was scanning your title list, and immediately thought of the Mermen

How about Crappie Rapala?

Pretty much ANY electric plugged straight into an old Deluxe Reverb is my favorite tone...

There's a good reason why so many boutique amp builders have patterned their products after those smaller old Fender tube amps...

I have an old Fender Tweed Deluxe and a Victoria Tweed Deluxe. The Jazzmaster doesn't sound right with them.
They're better for the Tele.

Man! You have some super nice amps! Good for you! I am just a little envious!

To me, the Deluxe Reverb "sound" is vastly different from the old Deluxes, and it's not just the reverb portion. They seem like completely different amps.

Hence my "Deluxe Reverb" comment! And I stand by it!!! Ha!
