Default Emerald Road Trip

Today, I and my two Emeralds took a road trip to the other side of town to meet with a fellow AGFer, futboljim. Jim had reached out through our Twin Cities AGF Facebook group to see if there was anyone local who had an Emerald he could take for a spin - so, naturally, I responded, and after a brief exchange of messages I went to visit this morning.

Jim has a lovely collection of guitars, including a rather fine Rainsong APLE - first time I've seen and played one of those, and it certainly lives up to its billing. He also has a Journey OF660, so he 'gets' CF.

We spent a happy couple of hours chatting, and playing. I think he rather liked my X20 - at least, I heard this afternoon that he's spent rather a lot of time on Emerald's website looking at veneers He played it quite a bit, and I was once again pleased with how good it sounds to the listener, as well as the player. It would have been even better with new strings...

The X20-7 was admired as well, but not really what he's looking for. Hopefully he'll drop in here and comment as well - he did mention that he's not had much time to spend here recently. Here are a couple of shots of the occasion - I could have sworn I had the X20-7 in my hands for my photo, but, alas, it was the regular X20. Jim's first, with the lovely matching rosewood Thalia capo, and then me.

David, Thanks for being an advocate for carbon guitars! I'm, really enjoying my recently-acquired Emerald X-20! Being primarily a RainSong player, I'm now smitten with my first Emerald and I hope Jim gets one, too!

I don't consider myself so much 'an advocate for carbon guitars' - after all, I still own several wooden ones, and my 1963 Martin 0-16NY would be the one I'd grab if I ever had to get out here in a hurry.

The Emeralds are both eminently replaceable.

I did buy my first Emerald without ever seeing, holding or playing one. That leap of faith was well justified, and resulted in me buying a second.

If I can help someone else with a decision, somone who would like to 'try before buy', I'm more than happy to do so, regardless of what the ultimate decision is.

Unless that person wants to buy my Martin, that is

Excellent report and get-together. Kramster has been gracious enough to host us twice, and I can pay that forward. I am happy to be the "Kramster of the northwest" for anyone wanting to visit the Boise area and test drive our collection. We even have a LGS that routinely stocks CA guitars. CF'ers have to stick together..... a small but fervent group.

I'm going to need a few more guitars before I approach those lofty heights

Apologies, Dave - the last several weeks have been a blur, and I have been remiss in not getting here to chime in. It is hard to believe what life throws at a person sometimes - two family members with serious surgeries, a bout of flu that kicked my ***, followed by pneumonia that was even worse. The good news is that the fam came through like champs (still some concerns to work through for them, but outcomes that were about as good as we could hope for), and I am finally feeling like I am close to full energy again.

I really appreciate that Dave was so kind to make the effort to connect! Really great guy, and we had a good time playing a little of this and that. I am definitely a fan of the Emeralds that he brought over. The X20 is going to be the perfect choice for me, I believe, and I look forward to picking one up. Most likely going to be moving the 000-18GE and the Larrivee LV-09 on, in order to make room.

I loved the balance across the strings, and found that the neck shape works just fine for me. I truly enjoy each of the guitars in my stable, but feel the need to have a CF to leave at the lake year round, rather than always using my OF660 all the time. Call it a lesson in rationalizing a purchase, lol!

Hopefully, now that my feet are back on the ground, I will work on selling off a couple of guitars, and place an order for an X20!

Dave, thanks again for allowing me the chance to test drive your Emeralds. It was a pleasure meeting you, and hanging out for a bit!
