It's bear claw cedar. The markings are not as dramatic as what occurs in spruce. It's a gentler pattern that shows best under finish

Call me crazy, but I would have loved to see a Sycamore guitar from what I see on the side linings!

I would be an interesting looking guitar. Sycamore is really a soft wood and has what I would call a negative tap tone. I have/had a back and side set but elected to just use if for laminates. Nothing wrong with an interesting inside look.
I'm channeling Chris Jenkins.

Your lovely brother has built one and it is gorgeous!

The other thought I had was if adding the rosewood to the top of the braces changes the back tap tone to more rosewood than walnut, are we really playing braces more than the back woods? I have heard it stated that if you thin the back too much, you are playing the braces.

You mean my brother builds guitars too?

There is certainly a dynamic going on between the plate and the braces. A lattice like bracing pattern has a larger area of brace than a more traditional ladder bracing system, and probably has more influence on the taptone of the plate. If the braces were solid rosewood that would certainly change the sonic behavior of the back plate, and if the braces were only partly rosewood then who knows. I’m thinking it would depend on the placement of the rosewood strip. I’m obviously rambling here.

Smile Autocorrect…

I bet John meant “my brother builds guitars TOO?”

I swear autocorrect changes stuff as I push the send button….

This axe is BEAUTIFUL, and I agree about the beauty of the inner sides.

Cheers

Paul

I agree that sycamore does have appealing grain, and if anyone can make it sing my brother can, but I decided to pass on a wood that I felt would take special effort to get the tone to be what I wanted.

Paul thanks for the interpretation and as always your positive interactions.

Default Ready tor Tony

This guitar is off to The White Room to meet Tony.

The end graft is made of oak firewood just like the rosett

A little mineral spirits added to show color. I’m toying with the idea of doing an edge burst that matches the walnut sides

DO it, bro! And yes, your brother does build guitars too—which admittedly calls his opinions into serious question—but I think you would love the effect of a subtle perimeter burst.

Thank you for the advice brother! I do appreciate input that is definitive and unambiguous and such that I don't have to ponder what was really meant. Especially so if it confirms what I already thought. So edge burst it will be.

Smile Love the spalt!!!

That spalted oak top purfling and the oak around the maple in the rosette is a knock out!

Mighty interesting, especially with a build happening!

Cheers

Paul

I am betting this will be a knockout, John. Very tasteful design and wood choices and details. Super nice. I need to sell some guitars to make room for more guitars!
