Default saddle shims (piezo pickup) (fng, apologizes)

Just picked up an older acoustic bass... preparing to to replace the strings, I took the opportunity to clean some of the years off... then I notice two long thin shims. Both are thicker on one end. How can I tell which direction is correct (hopefully) before installing the new string?
I have done a topic search, without much help...
I thank you & apologize for any redundancy this query creates... but:
I'm the f....in' new guy... it's my job.
Later.

My hunch in that the thin end would go to the treble side to make the saddle sit low and, consequently, the treble strings lower, and the bass strings higher.

However, it may be the case that to get more response from the bass strings, the shims were used to somehow balance the piezo pickups across the strings and/or give more bias to the bass side.

If I were you, I'd try it first with the thick side at the bass side, tune it, play it and see how it intonates and responds when plugged in. If things are off, switch it up and try again. If still off, maybe one went one way and thr other went the other way...
