CLOSED ... Alaska Yellow Cedar top sets..3 of them for sale
(See final post for closure details)
I have three sets of Alaska Yellow Cedar for guitar tops. (see post below for revised information) Clear, straight, consistent and tight grain, quarter sawn of course. These are all cut from one billet, so they are all related, and pairs are book-matched. About 23 5/8” long X just shy of 8” wide. These were rough-cut on a bandsaw and thus thickness varies from .130 to .190, with average around .150 - .170. (.95 to .105 needed for most tops so plenty to work with) They have not been planed or sanded, so bandsaw kerf lines are present. I can thickness-sand for additional fee. Would like to sell all three sets (6 boards total) together for shipping purposes. $100 for all, PLUS actual shipping. I prefer USPS for convenience, but will ship UPS if need be. I acquired these many years ago, so they are dry and stable. With my first build project, I used ALC (over walnut) and was very pleased with the outcome. See picture, Alaska Yellow in front, Western Red in back. (the striping and dimple on the set I used was unique to THAT set, and not on these) Last edited by woodbox; 05-10-2021 at 10:27 AM. REVISED..
I received 4 inquiries right away, and a couple subsequently, but the wood is still available.
One variation is that although I wanted to ship these as a lot of 3 sets, I’m now willing to break up the group. I had a local party inquire about acquiring just one set, leaving two. Well, that deal didn’t come together, so I still have 3 sets, but if anyone is interested in one or two sets, I’d work with you on that. Shipping fees could make sending one or two cost-prohibitive, but let’s talk and see if we can work something out. I also have a couple sets of Western Red Cedar for top wood, and a set of Sapele for back wood. |

Revised again, pictures added
With over 350 views, it appears that some folks like looking at this wood,
so I thought I’d add a few new pictures. I realize this is a bit unusual.. meaning, if this was Spruce it would have a broader appeal. In my limited experience, Alaska Yellow Cedar gives a more mellow response compared to Sitka Spruce, but not as subdued as Western Red Cedar, with its natural attenuation. It’s kinda in-between those two, with a leaning more towards the Sitka tonally, but not as bright. It is soft like WRC, yet stiff like SS. It “works” predictably, but I had to be very careful during the build as it dents easily. And it smells heavenly! I was planning to use it again for my next build, but have some Adirondack Im going to put over Sapele instead. One more build project, then I’m done, thus the sale. Some dimensional pictures for your viewing pleasure. First shows an average board thickness and end grain. Other two show length and width. Last edited by woodbox; 05-03-2021 at 01:58 PM. |

Ahhh, the games we play in our own mind.
I’ve entertained myself with this listing by watching the number of views it’s had, based on popular engine sizes back in the 60’s and 70’s, notated in cubic inches. Which has absolutely nothing to do with guitar wood, but I had fun with it. I waited and watched for the 144, 170, 200, 225, 230, 240 and 250 six cylinder tallies. Followed by the V-8 models- 265, 273, 283, 289, 302, 305, 307, 326, 327, 340, 348, 350, 351, 352, 360, 383, 389, 390, and 396. Then came the 400, 409, 413, 425, 426, 427, 428, 429 and 430 and the mighty 440, 455, 460 engines. Yes, I left a few out.. like the torquey big six truck motors 292 and 300, and others. This may be a crazy way to bump a listing, but this all to say, I’ll leave the listing up to see if Cadillacs 500 cu in motor comes into play, and then take it down so others have room for their stuff. |

Well, I woke up this morning..
(hey, I could write a blues song and start with that line. nah ... that’s a dumb idea) So, I see the number of views has indeed surpassed Cadillac’s 500 cu in, and even Dodge Viper’s 512!! And that’s as big as it gets for passenger car motors to my knowledge. (tried to have some fun with this) So I’ll close this listing and let it drift to back pages so it’s not competing for space on page one. If anyone is reading this and has any interest, send me a PM.. Private Message. Thanks AGF |
