Default short scale 12 fret dred?

Anyone have experience with this combination.?
In talking with the builder, looking at the idea of a short scale 12 fret Dred based on the woods, Adi / Guatemalan Rosewood ...I think it would be great.

The only guitar I've seen but not played is a 12 fret round shoulder Gibson.

Thanks for any input!

Goodall’s TRLD models are 25” scale length, I’ve owned 3 or 4 them and they have all been incredible!

One of my all time favorite guitars is my Flammang RS35. It’s a 12 fret short scale dread. Big fan of the short scale, 12 fret dreads from Santa Cruz. I find that design just really suits me.

Smile Good idea

I have small hands and like a warm, fat tone.

John Kinnaird has built me 5 large body 25” scale 12 fret cutaways. I sold two so I could continue our builds…. All have been spectacular.

Thanks John

See the current build in my signature.

I say go for it

Paul

You're describing the Gibson Roy Smeck signature model (and the RS designation in the Flammang model).

Gibson designed the guitar for lap playing. Folks have been converting them to normal (i.e., "Spanish) play for decades. Jackson Browne has been a leading proponent of the Roy Smeck. Here he is with his:

I've played a number of converted Smeck's, including Jackson's. IMVHO, it's a fabulous design.

For me 25" is normal/long scale, I don't think short scale until it's under 24" - 23.5" Byrdland for example. When I think short scale and dreadnaught (big body), I immediately wonder about bridge placement. But 12 fret helps a lot with bridge placement in the lower bout. Sounds a wonderful project!

I have a 14 fret Dobro from 1935, the lower bout and the bridge location is identical to all the "normal" 12 fret models, they just smalled up the whole upper bout to get the neck to join at the 14th fret. I quite wonder why they decided to do that. Why was 14 fret so important in 1935 all of a sudden?

I have an Olav Loef Sloped Shoulder 12-fret Swiss Spruce and Sapelle and it has superseded my Martin OM-18. It is a great guitar, very comfortable and with an extraordinary sound.

I once had a short-scale 12-fret Dread built by a local luthier. It also had Manzer wedge. Sounded great but I had to sell it for ergonomic issues. Too big for me.
