Default NGD from New Zealand - Benavides Guitar (Redwood/Koa Deep Body OM)

From time to time, I like to look at what guitar wood suppliers have to offer as I am a sucker for highly flamed or figured woods for a guitar build. So if I see something that I fancy and knowing that they won’t last long, I jump on it. Over the last 4 years, I managed to secure a set of Koa, a set of Madagscar Rosewood and a set of Macassar Ebony for the back and sides and a set of Redwood and Adirondack for the soundboard. I have them sent to Dave, in New Zealand, for safe keep and hopefully one day, we can commission some builds with the wood sets I acquired.

A new build started several months back and after much discussion, we decided to do a Deep Body OM with a Redwood and Koa combo. Dave was very happy with the wood acquired except for the Macassar Ebony so we decided to use the Macassar Ebony for decorative purposes and as such it was used as binding, rosette and headstock veneer for this build.

Dave has been very easy to work with and his input into this build has been invaluable whilst working within my constraints. This is my 3rd build with Dave (I sold his 2nd build which is a 00 to someone who wanted it so bad after trying it out).

The specs for the guitar are as follow:

Body: Deep Body OM
Top: Redwood
Braces: Sitka Spruce with Hot Hide Glue
Back and Sides: Koa
Fingerboard: Ebony
Binding on fingerboard, body, and headstock: Macassar
Purfling: Maple
Rosette: Macassar and maple rings
Neck: Quilted Sapele
Tuners: Gold Gotoh Mini 510
Fretwire: Evo Gold (Jumbo Size)
Nut & Saddle: Bone
Scale: 25.19”
Bridge Pins: Tortoise with abalone dots

Finished pics to come later this week.

Isn't it an interesting coincidence that I can see The Eye of Sauron in this New Zealand guitar back? Looks really beautiful!

That's beautiful. I'm interested to hear your comments on the sound as this is a unique wood combination.

It is unique, this combo is not uncommon to Lowden guitars
