Leo kottke tuning question
Does anyone know what tuning Leo used for his track from 6 and 12 string guitar called "Vaseline Machine Gun"?
Someone told me one it was like open D except tuned all the way down to Bb, does anyone know for sure? |

Tab Pigs
Will, do a Google search for the Tab Pigs and go to their page, excellent transcriptions of many of Leo's songs.

I've played that one for a long time (since I heard it on the LP- the original one). I play it in open G (DGDGBD) and it seems to work fine. Leo probably has it tuned down some, but the intervals are the same.

There are two recorded versions of VMG, one solo and one with a rhythm section. They are both tuned in the form of open G, but dropped down either three or four semitones. The tuning that I use for it is BEBEG#B, which is open G form, dropped down a minor(?) third to open E. That is the tuning that is used for the version with the band. The solo version is a semitone lower.
You could certainly play it in open G if you wish. Good luck, VMG is one fun tune to play; it's a real workout!

Open G, on a 12-string, as is Jack Fig from that album. Watermelon is in open D tuning.

Leo Kottke played VMG as the second of two encores when I last saw him a few years ago. I was blown away by the song when I first heard it on the Armadillo album ages ago (actually, the whole album blew me away), and it was equally mind-blowing to see him do it live.
