Beautiful. John is magic. Wishing the very best for both of you and the project.

Greg,
I’ll be going to the shop for a neck fitting tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it. H

So as I mentioned I'll be going to John's today, provided the weather is cooperative so that we're dry and practicing good social scale length. The purpose of the visit is to make sure that the neck template patterns I provided are being attained, and make adjustments as needed.
This guitar is 12 frets to the body, so even if the neck matches my 14 fret Flammang L-40 (pattern for THAT taken from my 1930 Gibson L-5), the waist of Lacorsa (the Monteleone model) is in a different place, so the body/neck centerline is slightly different. IT ALL COUNTS! So.......The only REAL way to test a neck is how? With strings on, right? Of course, but it's a flat top guitar and you don't glue the bridge on until after the finish, yada, yada........So on a whim I suggested that John try something.....something we've all seen on inexpensive 1930's & 1940's guitars at one time or another: So I get to try it 'in the white' as it's referred to in the trade. It's easy on an archtop, and on an archtop it'll give you a very good idea of how the instrument sounds. On a flattop? Not so much, but the intention here is to shape the neck ONCE, correctly, and get it into finishing. For that it'll be just fine! Here's the finished headstock, by the way. My kind of ebony on that FB & headstock! Best, Howard

Side by Side
Well, well........going for the neck fitting at John's yesterday was very nice despite the social scale length, masks, etc, but it sure answered the question about how comfortable this guitar would be in my hands: VERY!
It's much more petite than it presents in the pictures. Also, I would never have expected that it sound like much given the tailpiece rig, but it was very noisy for a flattop guitar not yet fitted with a glued bridge and bridge pins! Now I'm really anxious to get it done! And despite the clashing of the shirt color with my hat, the guitar still looks like it belongs, although I can't wait for it to be violin red!

So nice.
I can almost hear it Howard. I bet this guitar will be really special in your hands. That little cutaway is nicely shaped functionally, and looks good. A real beauty in the making. The finish color will be the ultimate knock-out punch.

Violin red.....be still my heart!
This is the color I first saw on a mandola that John built for the son of Elizabeth Taylor. There's a framed picture of Liz, dressed to the nines in a red dress, holding her son's Montelone Mandola, hanging on the wall in John's shop. From the first time I saw the picture it was love.........
I'll be playing it soon, if the fates allow........ HE

Hi Matthew,
It's irresistible to me, to be honest. John tells me the back & sides are Big Leaf maple. The violin he made from wood from a maple tree near John's childhood home that came down during hurricane Gloria. HE
