He's never made a post that didn't include some reference to Taylor guitars so that brings one question to mind... Bob, is that you?

On a recent project we tried several of these (including Abbey Road's online mastering). The client is a multi-grammy winning artist...and a friend. We did it to see how different it was from a real mastering engineer. We even threw Ozone into the mix for fun.

Let's just say there were no surprises. A real person, with great ears & gear they know how to use is light years better than any automated process or cookie cutter "assembly line" service.

And considering a good master can be had for just under $100...it seems hard to justify. But cheap & convenient seem to be very seductive.

For anyone who has used such a service, I have a few questions...

The service I am considering doesn't use stems. I am considering
https://www.thisismetropolis.com/onlinemastering/

You send them you already mixed song and they just master it. Are there places that will take your stems, mix them to the correct levels, EQ, etc. then master it for you?

If I do the above web company, do I just send the final version, with all effects intact for each track?

Yes, you send them the final version bounced down to a stereo track. If you have global fx on the master fader, I'd send it with and without those fx but leave the track fx intact.

Stem mastering is a different animal because it's a sort of hybrid of mixing and mastering rather than straight up mastering. Not everyone is going to offer it and those who do are likely to charge a premium for it since much more work is involved.
