I have not used them, but Aquila makes a wide range of strings for classical guitar.

https://www.stringsbymail.com/classi...s-1/aquila-52/

The company specializes in making new synthetic formulations designed to be used on early instruments and to mimic gut, so they might be an acceptable substitute.

Not Steve,
I’ve been told that the fluorocarbon strings more closely replicate the gut strings.
I haven’t done the experiment myself as yet mainly due to the high cost and relatively short life of the gut strings.
I would be very interested to hear your resuts.

I've played both gut and fluorocarbon on ukuleles, and they sound radically different.

Aquila Nylgut are pretty close, designed to produce a similar sound.

Aquila Nylgut 'claim' to have a gut sound. I like them but I have never played true gut strings to compare. The Nylgut strings though, they just seem to stay in tune really well.

If you're using nails, make sure they're perfect. It's very easy to ruin a gut string, especially
the high e string. I've done it more than once.

As others have said, Aquila Nylgut. I would recommend specifically the Aquila Ambra 800 & 900 sets.

Another option is Martin Magnificos:

I have never played real gut strings myself, but I found these strings to be really different. I liked both the tone and feel of these, they also lasted a long time for me.

I've tried different strings - nylon, nyl-gut, carbon, and gut. Really nothing sounds like gut but gut. The nyl-gut strings kind of lean in that direction, but to me, they still sound like nylon strings.

True gut is, of course, expensive. I have a baroque guitar with 5 courses (9 strings) and it costs about $90 to string it. Of course the strings don't corrode, so they sound good longer. Except the treble string, in particular, breaks most often.

"..really nothing sounds like gut but gut."

That's how I hear them, as well.

I ordered a set to give them a try.

So far my favorite classical strings are Galli Genius, hard tension Titanio.
I bought them because I read that Jason Vieaux used them. Recently I checked again and now he uses Augustine strings, so I may try them.

I will. I just put them on. Stretching will take a couple of days I suppose.

I can do a demo comparing them to a set of Augustine Black low tension 28 32 40 28.5 32.5 43.5 that I've had on for 7 months. The guitar wasn't heavily played during that time, only the past month or so have I been playing it every day. I did some recordings on the 19th of a tune I'm working on and a snippit or two are fair enough for public exposure. I'll play the same thing and post both short recordings in a new thread.
