1923 Loar
For all you mandolin fans I thought I would park this here...we picked up a Gibson mandolin signed by Mr. Lloyd Loar and dated February 26, 1923! I put a bunch of pictures up on our little blog I've been trying to get off the ground:
http://lowevintage.tumblr.com/post/4...-is-today-lowe I've got a little short clip of my buddy playing it too...you'll notice we drew the curtains! Paranoia sets in somewhat when you've got an instrument that valuable with you. I wish I knew how to play...I've been fooling around on it a little bit and I think I may have been bit by the mandolin bug. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAPmHRaM_jg |

Very cool. One of 11 signed that day by Loar. Is your SN in this list?

Sure is...SN#72204. We're the third owner...it was bought new by a gentleman who had it for 45 years who then sold it to Jim Smith, a friend of Sonny Osborne, who then kept it exactly 45 more years before selling it to us.
Jim told me when we bought it that if his grandson had taken an interest in mandolin he would have passed it on to him. Ouch. |
