Finished cleaning up the binding and installing the radial purfling today. So, the woodwork on the body (besides the mortise) is done!
Here's the end-graft with the binding... And the front... And the back... I'm getting excited to see this one under finish. I think the inlays and purflings are really going to pop once I get a little bit of shine on there! Mike |

Thanks Tom!
Not the most exciting batch of pictures this time around, but I have been making good progress on the neck. Mortise and tenon are cut and here I'm gluing on the fingerboard extension... What I'm really excited for is to get to work on the headstock. This one will be a slot-head and my first attempt at binding a headstock! The veneers are currently drying and by the end of tomorrow I can hopefully glue the fingerboard... Of course, before gluing the fingerboard I actually need to make the fingerboard. I'm running a thin line of maple inside of the binding strips and in this photo I'm using small pieces of half-cut dowel to press the maple into place... Thanks for looking! Mike |

Got a whole bunch of work done on the headstock today. Here it is partially cleaned up and with tuning machine holes drilled...
And a bit farther along... As I mentioned this is my first attempt at binding a headstock. It took a little bit of figuring, but I settled on a pretty simple way to cut the binding channel (which I forgot to take a picture of) and it went pretty smoothly! Some of the strips installed... And bound! Of course I couldn't just leave it at that! I knew I wanted to have a center section on the headstock that went with the theme of the guitar and decided to do it after gluing the head veneers and binding. I think it's crucial to have this inlay in line with the slots in the head and I didn't want to risk something slipping while gluing. So, here's where I left it at the end of a long day... Hopefully by tomorrow a finished headstock! Mike |

And here it is!
This will be my last post for a little while -- I'm flying over to Spain tomorrow morning to meet up with my girlfriend and we will be travelling abroad (mostly Ireland and Scotland) until early June. Hope you all have a nice month and a half! Bye for now, Mike |

Mike, the woodwork on this is a new kind of impressive for me. Seriously.

Thanks James! A lot of experimenting and trying out new techniques on this build. Exciting to think about all the new possibilities and designs to try with some of the things I've learned!
(and I guess I lied... waiting in the airport has given me more than enough time for another post!) Mike |

Greetings everyone!
I just got back last night from a fantastic trip abroad and am ready to get back to work! Lots to catch up on around here so I had a short day in the shop but managed to get a little bit closer to a finished headstock. Here's a shot with the Waverly tuners put in to get a better idea of what if will look like when it's finished... Lot's more to come in the next few weeks as I carve the neck and get started on the french polish! Mike |
