I think he tries to hard to copy the well known Dave Speak humor.
True, but some of John's guitar playing makes Dave look like he's plucking a rubberband.

I still think that, overall, Dave is the better songwriter though.

NO DOUBT! No doubt in my mind that Mayer is a better guitarist technically.

I also agree Dave is a better song writer. I love Mayers lyrics, but there is something about his stuff that gets old quickly for me and I'll have to take a break from it whereas I never get tired of Dave's songs (Edxcept for stupid 'Crash (into me)')

Listening to this cat sing is almost as awful as Dave Mathews singing. What's worse is that Mayer is probably trying to do this.

John Mayer is one of the best guitar players ever. Lyrically he is very good as well, but it is a different style than DM. However they both studied songwritting at Berkeley under Pat Pattison. I don't think that one is better than the other, I just think they are different styles. John is more conversational, Dave Matthews is not.

Cat Daddy,

That's a good description of their songwriting differences. I tend to prefer songwriting that is more direct like Mayer rather than Dave's style which I would describe as more abstract. I had never heard that Dave was @ Berkley and I know John didn't last there very long before he left.

I to had never heard that Dave studied at Berkely, and to be honest, I don't think that is true (Not to call you a liar. Please don't take it that way)... I know that he was a student at UVA for a time.

Anyway, though studying at Berkeley is awesome I don't think Mayer should get as much credit as he does for studying there. He dropped out after a year, and yet people still reference him as "John Mayer who attended Berkeley Music College" as if he had a major in performing arts. That schooling for a year isn't what makes him a phenominal guitarist... it's his constant practice for the last 12 years since he started playing.

I think the difference in their song writing styles is what has elevated Mayer to the level he is at now. He has a new cool style that does not relic anything else that I have heard. If he had tried to copy Dave he wouldn't have made it because we already have a Dave Matthews to listen to.

While I definitely wouldn't say that John is one of the best guitar players ever, he is VERY good and you do have to give him credit for it. His real skill level isn't really revealed in any of his recorded stuff, but when he plays live, he improvises and solos like nobody's business! Seriously, you have no idea just how good he is til you hear him live.

Iceman,

Pick up the "Any Given Thursday" dvd live concert of John Mayer. He's got to be seen/heard live to appreciate his ability. While it's hard to say he's one of the best ever, I would say he's one of the best guitarists in popular music today. As far as singer/songwriters, I can't think of many that are more skilled at playing the guitar.

He is freaking awesome. I first saw him play at Eddie's Attic in '98. My band was playing up there on an open mic night so we went to check it out the Monday before. He was playing in a two man group called "The Low-Fi Masters" Him and Clay Cook. He found out that my band was opening at "The Strand" in Marietta and he called and asked if he could open for us. Look at him now. He is a lot better live. His CD's do not do him justice.

I don't think John needs the credit attributed to studying at Berkelee. His playing speaks for itself.

I have never heard of John Mayer. Where is he from?

If you like DMB, I would recommend Ani DiFranco. She is an excellent and unique rhythym guitarist, with amazing lyrical ability, and every album I have heard of hers is better than her last (well, except one, but this still says a lot because she has like 15 albums).

p.s.: word of warning - if you have conservative political views you may not like what Ani has to say.....personally I love it, but I have seen some people react with great anger to the mention of her name.
