Manassas ( the double record set) Stephen Stills at his creative best with Chris Hillman and 5 other great musicians. ive been listening to it since 72 and have never tried of it, really just a wonderful , collabortive work of art.

Pete Townsend's "Empty Glass", possibly the best Who album not actually performed by The Who.

Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night", as badass & outlaw as he ever got IMO.

Both albums compulsory listening from beginning to end even after 40-45 years.

Well this makes the 3rd recommendation for XTC but I'm going to pick a different album from the others ... Apple Venus vol1.

I describe it as 'Pop music for adults'.

Here's a sample track that I mistakenly thought was Paul McCartney when I first heard it.

Anything by Squeeze. One of the best bands ever; great writing, singing, and playing.

Although not new, I’ve been listening to The Pat Metheny Group’s “Offramp” album lately. Check out the song “Are You Going With Me”. It was composed by Metheny and keyboardist Lyle Mays and it just hits me.

+4 for XTC. And if you like "Skylarking," which is perhaps the most Beatles-esque album from the band, then check out The Dukes of Stratosphear, which was a spinoff of the band with heavy psychadelic influences.

I'd encourage you to check out Oasis, who led the Britpop wave of the 1990s and were heavily influenced by The Beatles. Also, Wilco, who have a 25 year catalog of music featuring Jeff Tweedy's Neil Young / Beatles influenced songwriting. A third would be Death Cab For Cutie, particularly their earlier albums.

Flaming Lips would be another choice, although I don't listen to them enough to make a solid recommendation.

No one is quite like The Beatles, but in the same vein of British Pop, you might give The Housemartins a shot. Not a big catalog but it's all great stuff.

Basket of Light by The Pentangle. Lots of acoustic guitar on this one, and the most "Pop Song" like album any of the this great bands members ever made.


Forever Changes by Love An extraordinary LP full of the desire for strangeness and experimentation of the year 1967. A good deal of acoustic guitar use.


Of course there, to my mind, about 10,000 interesting records out there, but these are three from the Beatles times that you might not run across unless I listed them.

To Basket of Light, I'd add Sweet Child - one side live, one studio.

And, since you're a Beatles fan, try the first few Byrds records - they started out sounding like they wanted to be the Beatles when they grew up, but came out sounding like themselves.
