Default I'm Just Not That Happy With My Gibson G45-Studio

I bought a new Gibson G-45 Studio back in March. I bought it just because I wanted a Gibson acoustic...

It sells for $999 which includes a really nice hardshell case and free shipping. I know it's Gibson's least expensive acoustic guitar... It sounds "good" but not as good as my Martin which I bought new on sale for $460 (originally $600). My favorite acoustic is my Taylor 814ce though.

I am wondering if I should sell the Gibson or just keep it and enjoy using it when I want to. I love the look of the Walnut back/sides.

It just sounds so thin compared to the 814ce. To be fair, the 814ce was around $3000 in 2006... So I know it's not a fair comparison...

What's interesting to me is that the Gibson sounds pretty good but then when I pick up the 814ce, the difference is just so extreme.

I'll have to give this more thought. But I definitely have enough acoustics for now! The 814ce is really all I need...

I haven't been a huge fan of the G-45's I've played. The slimmer body gives them, as you mentioned, a pretty thin sound and, overall, I don't think they really have that classic Gibson tone. Might be worth trying some different strings on it if you haven't, but otherwise I would just sell it if I were in your shoes. If you don't love a guitar after six months of trying to bond with it, then it's probably not the one. I think the J-15's sound much better than the G-45's, and used ones can usually be found right around $1k. Might be worth trying one out if you still want a Gibson. Or a J-45 if you're ok opening up the checkbook quite a bit more.

If the Taylor is you're favorite. Dump the G-45 and get a 214. See if you're any happier with that.

I have this same problem. I have several acoustics of varying tone profiles and expense and pedigree, and individually each one sounds fantastic. The problem is when I start comparing to the others in my stable. I wish I could be the kind of guy that is happy with just one of something without always wanting something different, but I always wonder what is out there that could be better for me.

It can cost me a lot of money....

my g-45 sounds great amplified thru my fender tone master deluxe reverb amp. you need to tweak the g-45 sound hole controls a bit to get the glorious sound of it.....but it's there....

I'm only referring to the natural unplugged sound. I don't use the electronics.

Dump it. You gave it a fair try. It didn’t work out. Life’s too short to hang onto guitars that don’t bring you joy.

I had a Taylor I just couldn't bond with too some time back.
Tried everything.
One day out of sheer desperation I threw on a set of 'Nashville' or 'High Strung' strings - basically the thin octave strings from a 12-string - unusual haunting sound, kept me interested with that guitar a little longer but I did move it on eventually.

I think comparing the G to the 814 is an apples to oranges kind of thing. The 814 is going to make a lot of guitars sound thin.

Body depth is one of the specs I keep my eye on when I'm buying. 4.5" is a nice place to be.

There are too many great guitars out there that would be a better fit for you.
Sell it and find something that you like more.

It just happens sometimes. A guitar that's perfectly fine but you just don't bond with it - mine is a Les Paul that I should love but don't. I'd pass it on if I were you.

That's the reason I'll never buy a studio, it's life buying a dread that's not as good as a dread. I can't stand thin sounds from a dread. Go for the J15!
