Default Truss nut - beginner's question

On my Yamahas with the adjustment accessible through the sound hole:

Is it the nut that is being turned, or is it the rod itself? (If it's the nut, it's OK to remove it and inspect the threading, maybe a little grease? Strings loose, of course. Maybe put a washer under it.)

If going clockwise the "nut" - or is really one end of the rod? - reaches a point of high resistance but there's still a bit too much relief, what should I do?

Not sure exactly what truss rod you have fitted, but.....

If you unwind and the nut comes of then you have a one way truss rod and you can do what you want to do.

If the nut does not come off and the neck starts to bow in the opposite direction then you have a two way truss rod and you physically will not be able to remove it.
