And sometimes all you have to do is hit the F note and forget about the chord.

I've been playing for around fifty years, ans I'm still not good at barre chords.
I tend to play a lot of numbers in C or Cshape D etc., so the IV chord is an E ahape F or G. My method id the "thumb over" style, which no-one has yet mentioned. it is , effectively: 1 (f) 1 (c) 2 (a) 3 (f) 4 (c) T (f) Here's how I suggest you approach it. Put you guitar on a floor stand. Pick it up by the neck near the nut. Your thumb will curl around the neck with your fingers naturally falling into or near these positions ... try it at least. Edit: that fingering is slightly wrong , with the numbers indicating the fingers - read : 1 (f) index finger 1 (c) index finger 2 (a) 2nd finger 4 (f) pinky 3 (c) ring finger T (f) thumb Hope this helps

Due to proximity to the nut, an improper set up (especially the nut) can make F chords a real bear. You’re certainly not alone. After 40+ years, I still get some muted notes on my F, but have gotten over worrying too much. Occasional screw-ups are part of the charm!

Play the middle 4 strings without barring:
x 3 3 2 1 x It works.

Do you need a free finger for arpeggios?
If not, the Thumb Wrap F chord is always available. 1 - 1st fret 1 - 1st fret 2 - 2nd fret 4 - 3rd fret 3 - 3rd fret T - 1st fret I see Silly has covered basically what I've said Last edited by MartinGibsonFan; 07-16-2020 at 06:47 PM. |
