Neck Work
Here we have a picture of the BRW binging about to go on:
Meanwhile the various neck parts are coming together. You can see the stag inlay and the BRW fretboard is being aligned for gluing: Thanks for viewing! Mark

Wow, Mark, that's really coming along great! I need to get those neck measurements to you asap. I hope you are able to get this over to Charlie to compare to #1 - it would be interesting to get his take on the similarities and/or differences. I'll bet he would like that too!

Neck
I've been working on the neck today. I have the BRW heelcap going on:
I had the pleasure of carving the wonderful smelling Spanish Cedar neck too: More to come! Mark

Prebending Frets
I have the frets installed but before they are put in it is best to prebend the the fret wire to a radius that is a little tighter than the radius of the fretboard. I have this handy dandy fret wire bender that easily and consistently gets me to the exact radius I want:

Finish Work
Time to do the finish! Using the same French polish method I did with the original Woodsman I start with an egg:
The wood is sealed with the this outer egg white layer: This does a great job prepping the wood and doesn't darken end grain as much as more contemporary sealers do. I've had great success testing my new 200 proof alcohol as the solvent for the unbleached shellac flakes: Any impurities in the alcohol only softens the final finish. This is as pure as can be. The process begins:

The alcohol may be more pure than the Everclear you used on the first one, but it's sure not as cool of a label!

I agree with you Stan. That Everclear just seems to go with the Woodsman. I’m going to work on that a bit. This new alcohol I’m using is just better alcohol though. It comes from a very small distillery in Maine. The distillery isn’t too far from the Lie-Nielsen showroom/factory. My brother and I are planning to visit Lie Neilson for the tour this spring and I’d like to get out to that distillery and get to know them better. There could be a good story there.

You literally just paint/rub on the egg white as sealer?

Yes, egg white is about 90% water and the rest is a pretty pure mix of proteins. Several coats are applied basically right out of the egg using only the outer, thinner albumen layer of the egg white.
That may sound a bit strange in our synthetic polymer world but using egg white for this kind of purpose goes back centuries. Five hundred years ago Cennino Cennini wrote an artist’s guide called The Craftsman’s Handbook: “I’ll Libro del' Arte“. Cennino teaches the use of egg white or “glair” for sealing and sizing wood panels, canvases, and paper. Using egg white was also recommended as a binder for gesso, paint pigments as well as in the final lacquer. If you have ever admired the vibrance of color and the surface quality of art from medieval times you would have to agree the egg white works pretty well! Thanks for asking! Mark
