Burst on 31. 13 no burst. There is some pleasing symmetry to hose numbers

Burst it! Or at least color everything. Maple neck too?
I am of the opinion that coloring figured woods (especially lighter ones) actually accentuate the figure and add more depth.

Please no solid burst.
But a semi transparent burst were you can still see all the beauty of the wood might be very appealing.

After reviewing the thread, I like your example but I would go a shade lighter. Beautiful guitar.

Joe, when would you perform this coloring. Would you do it on raw wood or after the wood is sealed?

Both John, First color/stain would be wiped on and then the surface would be sanded back leaving just enough color to really amplify the curl, figure and three dimension of the wood. Once sealed, the actual shading/bursting would be applied. This is an older example of that technique. It helps the figure to stand out and remain visible in the darker shaded areas of the burst. Tony can do this AND do it very well as we know.

I think i read years ago that PRS actually uses (on high-end models) a micro brush by hand and accentuated the dark of the curls therefore adding POP when the finish and overall stains were applied.

I love my Doerr "Nick Lucas" (my words not his) but it is really sexy when the grain pops through. Check out his build thread for Trevor at Tamco. It is the second of his maples and he dialed it from almost black to "root beer" The grain pops and it looks sweet!

I'll be watching!

Gee, I feel very strongly that sunbursts only hide beautiful wood, and the wood on this guitar is pristine and beautiful!

this is kinda what I'm thinking. Like a 200 year-old violin.

The LP at the top of the LP forum is cool too.

http://www.lespaulforum.com/finalframes/frameset.htm

I like that they both accentuate the grain and figure yet both have the vintage vibe of well worn leather or denim. It makes a statement without being overly flashy. Old-school baby!

Sorry for the clunky links, I didn't want to hassle with embedding the images.

Good luck, Hope you didn't get TOO carried away on my new axe

Chris
