Fingerpicking is basically playing a chord background rythmically as an accompany to vocals or other instrument. Finger style is utilizing your fingers to play a tune chord/melody or as a solo instrumental. Fingerstyle can be inclusive to any style from the Travis/Atkins (Cotton picking) style to classical style.

This makes my head hurt,

The term finger style was invented because finger picking sounded to Red Neck!
