Practice amp recommendations for $100?
A friend of mine just bought an electric guitar (modeled after one of Prince's) and he already has an iRig that he uses to plug into his iPhone but is looking for a little practice amp to mess around with for no more than $100 or so. Any recommendations guys?
Thanks. Rob Last edited by guitar12; 07-20-2016 at 12:58 PM. |

Go to guitar center and buy a used Line 6 Spider IV. It'll run between $40 and $55. Buy the 2 year guarantee.
There are tons of other options, but the Spider has a ton of useful features, and is loud enough for playing with others, but with the master switch, can be whisper quiet. And tons of effects are built in. For the price it's hard to beat. If you're going to buy new at the $100 mark, there are a lot more options, but if you get the spider, you pocket $50.

Tell him to save up a few more bucks, wait for coupon days/holiday sales at GC, and pick up a Bugera V5...

There are so many factors to consider here: How much money do you have to spend? What kind of music do you like to play, and, therefore, what kind of sound do you want the amp to produce? There really is no "one size fits all" answer, since one of the questions you're asking is: "What SIZE amplifier fits your needs?" What are your needs in this situation, anyway?

since the iRig has lots of different sounds/options/effects, the used spider is probably where he'd find the most bang for the buck in matching available options
A better modeling amp however, would be either a Fender Mustang 1, or one of the new Marshall Code amps. |

Depending on your friends skill level, he might be just fine with getting on CL and buying whatever fits his budget. There is a point in the learning curve where the amp really doesn't matter. Find something that works, practice like crazy then go shopping for a good amp when you know what you're doing.

I really like my Vox VT 15 and would definitely recommend it. I think they can be found used around that budget. I think the new model of this would be the a at 20+.
It's a modeling amp with a tube in the pre-amp section. Has a ton of sounds and effects and can sound very tube like.

Update: My friend got the Blackstar ID core 10 for $100 and is really happy with it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Monoprice 5w Laney knock-off, it's a great tube amp for around $100.
