Banjo
Ok, don't kick me out of the club but this weekend I was on my deck and my neighbor below pulled out a banjo and started playing, I was blown away at how nice it sounded. Man, I don't need another hobby, lol

Playing banjo is fun! Do it! Do it! Succumb!
I have an old 5 string banjo from who knows when and who knows where. Inside the wood is gorgeous rosewood. It was in a local store when i bought it for pretty cheap awhile back. I love it! Here is a song I wrote where I'm playing banjo, guitar and singing. Thanks to Inyo, RobJ, and Tom B'sox for teaching me how to get a youtube link to work.

What style(s) of music might you want to play?

Had a Gariepy banjo built in the 1950s back in my banjo days. Definitely was infatuated with bluegrass music and the sound of a banjo. Still like to listen to that type of music now and then.

Thanks for all the information. Karen, will check your YouTube out tonight. Not sure what kind of music, don't listen to Bluegrass much, Celtic would be cool.

On the website Nymuso mentioned, banjoyhangout, there's a section for celtic banjo.
https://www.banjohangout.org/group/celticbanjo You got me thinking. I'm going to learn some of this music. Thanks!

Frankly, after taking up the banjo a little over a year ago, I find I play my guitars much less and don't really miss them. There's definitely some truth to the old saying: Banjos are fun to play and it's hard to feel sad while playing one!

If you don't mind spending a bit to get an American-made, professional, reasonably-priced banjo that's a great value, look at Bart Reiter's models (new from $1095 to $1595).

my favorite style of banjo music is the Old Timey stuff played Clawhammer style, typically on an open back 5 string.
loosely categorized as bluegrass, but a different style of banjo and banjo playing technique than the typical Flatt & Scruggs style.... much easier on the ears, imho
