Default What are your favorite Tom Petty songs to play and sing?

For some reason that I can't explain, I haven't been that familiar with this wonderful songwriter and am now doing a deep dive, preparing to buy up CDs and vinyl, looking for songs to do on my acoustic. He is a remarkable songwriter, I'm really amazed at the variety. The rockers are really fun and the ballads are deeply felt and highly poetic. Just off the first CD I bought, "Wildflowers", I've found four that I'd like to do, with "Time To Move On" my favorite, but not an easy song to do on acoustic.

What are your favorites?

Check out this thread. There are so many great Petty songs and so many of them are really fun to play. I’ve got a few on there and others a good deal more talented than I am have contributed some great stuff as well. Wildflowers is a great place to start - a real showcase for his songwriting talents. But his catalog is DEEP - much to check out…

Thanks for that! Yeah, he's amazing. And, what I'm finding, at least with Wildflowers, is that his songs are especially fun to sing. Some songwriters are like that, they just craft songs that are great for the voice .... The Beatles are like that as well. Tom's more chord friendly.

I'm drawn to some of the songs where he anchors the G on the 1st string.

I love Tom Petty's music. **** the Torpedos came out when I was in high school. Another skinny ugly guy with a crappy voice who gave the rest of us hope!

I've learned a bunch of his songs over the many years I've been playing.

I don't play any of his songs when I gig. He's just overdone in my area. Playing a Tom Petty song is like playing Freebird, or Stairway, or Wagon Wheel. Done to death.

I'm a big Tom Petty fan and really enjoy A Face In The Crowd, great tune.

Time to break out the 12 string.

Mary Jane's Last Dance... I loved that song forever, and when I finally got good enough to play songs, that was one of the first I learned, and still love playing it.

For so many reasons, his Wilburys collaboration on "End Of The Line". I think I've listened to this something like a hundred times.
I could never sing it, though. There's no possible way I could make it all the way through.
