Default What's the funniest song you do?

Somebody asked me this the other day and I had to give it some serious thought. I've got a few in the long list of songs I do to varying degrees of success that I would consider humorous, something to toss out to lighten things up or get a laugh.

Tightrope by Leon Russell.

Might not be so funny to some as others, since it's sort of about stage fright/stage love and the obsessive attraction of that. I think it gets a lot funnier if you can make your voice sound anything like Leon's, which is probably one of the more memorable voices ever. Helps to have tossed back a few.

Winchester Cathedral.

I can't remember who did this one but it's utterly silly. He's blaming the cathedral on his baby leaving town because it didn't ring it's bells as she was heading out. Really funny vocals on this one, sounding like they're heavily processed. Never fails to get smiles!

And, here's the weirdest one for sure.

Porpoise Mouth by Country Joe McDonald and the Fish.

This one is off Country Joe's 60's psychedelic masterpiece, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body". It's a very odd tempoed circus tune, a kind of love song with oddly inspired lyrics like, "I dance to the wonder of your feet, and sing to the joy of your knees" and "while scores of glittering bugs and flies, dance polkas on her limbs." And then, probably the strangest thing you might ever sing in public, "I hunger for your Porpoise mouth." Try singing this one to a girl on a first date and see how she reacts to it. That'll tell you a lot about her.

So, what funny songs do you'll have out there?

Can't post the title but it's one that Jackson Browne would throw into acoustic shows with Lindley back in the day. Written I believe by their friend Doug Hayward. Not for general audiences however.

If I'm playing a room where folks don't seem to be paying much attention, I will frequently lapse into "The Universe Song" from Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life"... just to see if anyone's listening!

We don’t do any intentionally comedic songs but I do find a few amusing. One is Baby Likes To Rock It by The Tractors.

It's likely something by John Prine like Fish and a Whistle, Everybody, Spanish Pipedream, Please Don't Bury Me, Dear Abby, That's the Way the World Goes 'Round....

Then there's the funny/poignant songs like Steve Goodman's You Should Have Seen the One Who Got Away, or My Dog Jesus by Kurt Fortmeyer

A buddy of mine does a song that's a blues type progression that Jimmy Thackery did "I Sold the B*** Car" with the tag line that was, and I bought a guitar. So, for fun last week I wrote a song that was "She Kicked the B**** Out" with the tag line and sold his guitar. I probably will never play it again.

I'd have to say "Classical Gas". There's never anyone who's nearly died of laughter anytime I played this for folks.

The greatest country song in the world.. by David Alan Coe

You don't even call me by my name

First lyric

IWas drunk the night my mom got out of prison
My mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in
The pouring rain
But befor I got to the station in my
Pickup truck..

You know the rest.. lo

I wrote an original that's kinda humorous and gets some chuckles, if not belly laughs. I was at a festival where someone was doing straight-to-record-disc recordings for anyone who came in, with '50s-era record lathes (the kind that might have been in a drug-store booth in the '50s), and I did this one:

You Never Even Called Me by My Name. By Steve Goodman (and John Prine, but he specifically didn't want to be publicly credited for it).

I used to be in a band which did a lot of comedy songs, but it was back in the 1970s, and most of them don't seem that funny any more (mostly ribald old folk songs)... But we did once support the man I consider the funniest singer I've ever seen. The room was in stitches through his whole set. Again, some of the humour might not have worn well, but these are my favourites of his:

I have an original "out among the weigela" that is a 3/4 time story song about a serial killer. Decidedly dark humor!
