Default Upbeat/Boot-stomper Suggestions

It’s nearly that time of year when my little band (me on rhythm guitar and harmonica, bassist, lead singer who sounds like Travis Tritt) retreat to a cabin for 3 days with all our gear and learn a bunch of new songs. Looking for suggestions to liven up our shows.

We love to play slower, harmony driven songs like JT’s “Carolina In My Mind” and Lionel Richie’s “Stuck on You.”

But we need more fun, upbeat stuff. People love when we do The Band’s “Ophelia”, Wagon Wheel, Fishin’ In The Dark.

Suggestions?

Not sure if Charley Crockett’s “Man from Waco” is upbeat enough, but its sure a catchy tune.

Check out the late great Billy Joe Shaver (Georgia on a Fast Train), some upbeat TVZ (Loretta, White Freightliner), of course Billy Strings (if you've got the chops), tons of good old Johnny Cash, Waylon, Willie.

IMO the 90's country and bro country it gave birth to are pretty weak sauce compared to the classics, today's Americana players and outlaw country.

I often kick off with "walking down the line". It's a Bob Dylan song, and a good foot tapper. The chorus is so simple that you'll have folks singing along even if they've never heard of it before.

I've played and studied traditional noter/drone mountain dulcimer for many years. And I used to play dobro in a bluegrass band.

More stuff from the Band... I do songs of theirs because I love 'em and I feel that people should never forget that group!!!

Classic Little Feat... "Dixie Chicken", "All That You Dream", "Two Trains", "Time Loves A Hero", "One Love Stand"... take your pick!

Classic Al Green tune... "Take Me To The River"

My last band used to use this as our opening song - also works well all-acoustic:
