Waterloo WL-14
Just curious about this guitar ,the sunburst look. any opinions on this guitar ? it looks real comfortable to play ! looks a little smaller than my OM28 in the body , but not quite as small as a parlor.

Most people coming from the Martin side of things like the WL-14 with the "small neck" option, so you may want to look for those.
Sound-wise, much different thing. Martin has that deeper bass, scooped out mids... the Waterloo will be much more "mids-forward" with a very dry, fundamental, some would say bluesy tone.

Love mine (it's ladder braced.) As stated - mid forward like an older Gibson, yet feels balanced, resonant and inviting. I love the feel of the larger neck - reminds me of my '30's 00 Regal and Martin. Delightful to fingerpick. It competes for my attention on equal footing as my '35 00-18 and my Bourgeois JOM (which I bought from AMW!). I'm having a Lyric installed on mine so I can use it live. I'm very excited! Mine is black with the tiger pickguard. I'd love a sunburst X brace, also. |

Mine's about 2-3 hours old (NGD post coming) and my fingers are getting sore, can't put it down. Also have the Black/Tiger stripe pick guard in X bracing. So easy to play, so responsive. Those mid line vibratos, tiny bends, everything just comes alive and makes your playing that much more expressive. Also interested in a pick up, I assumed I'd do a K&K like my Collings. I do get on open mics where its pretty loud with bass/drums etc, but Id sacrifice that end and use my Collings in order to get the dry woody tone this guitar delivers. If we're hijacking this thread, I'll take it to a new one

Go look at an original Kalamazoo KG 14 (the guitar these Waterloos are based on). There are a lot of them out there, feather light, built by Gibson in the 30's, great sunbursts, and often cheaper than the Waterloos. There are seven on Reverb right now from $1600 to $2200. Get a good one and they ring like silver and shine like gold...

While the Kalamazoo I had sounded and felt good, my WL-14 has the same attributes plus a truss rod and the benefits of an almost new guitar. I presume it will last 50+ years, without me of course, as well. I also bought it used for considerably less than any K14 in good condition I could find.

I too own an OM28, and I just purchased a Waterloo WL-14X. I definitely preferred the small neck option. Dimensionally, the Waterloo is a half inch smaller across the lower bout, the waist and upper bout are tighter, and is a tiny bit deeper. It's also 24.9" vs 25.5" on the Martin.
I think they make an excellent complementary pair. My Martin is deep, lush, and sustains, while the Waterloo is balanced, dry, and snappy. It also has incredible separation when playing chords, you can really hear every note clearly. |

Two things to consider:
1) the large V neck option is definitely a handful. 2) if you're used to the finish on a Martin you might not like the finish of the Waterloo. |

I like Waterloo’s. Had the ladder brace and the x brace of the 14. I would try all their models before you settle on one. Also you might want a 12 fret depending on what you play. The Kroydon in videos sounds best to me but if you want the dry wooden bluesy Gibson/Kalamazoo thing then the 14 model is a very good modern version.

I have a Waterloo WL-14 X and a Martin OM-28V. They both have a similar V neck that works well for me. The Waterloo has more of a midrange quick response whereas the OM is simply balanced with more low end. I love the WL-14. It's the most comfortable acoustic I've ever played and is just different. Great guitar. Here's mine:

The Waterloo WL-14s are the same size as a Gibson L-00.
I have both the WL-14 X and the WL-14 L. I love both! BUT.....if you want the full hokey pokey sound of the 30s, the ladder brace is an amazing guitar, especially as it available just about everywhere. I recorded a little ditty with my ladder for you - only shop bought guitar to get this sound!: https://soundcloud.com/bk7-3/hoke777b BluesKing777. |
