Default Modern spiritual?

Interesting that at the end of the clip Lawrence Welk refers to the song as a "modern spiritual"

I dont think so. The word Jesus is used in a variety of ways in our culture. I never understood why it was used as a swear word but that is one use of it. The song is about a stoner. I can see how the song could be interpreted as a Jesus freak song but the authors of the song have said no, that they were high when they wrote it. Further they said it was just a song, no real meaning to it.

If it’s the song I think it is it has that old-timey country gospel feel despite its *ahem* highly secular subject.

Not too surprising that neither Lawrence nor his viewers, which probably included my parents, didn't know what a "toke" was. haha This was a song about smoking weed, maybe to excess.

Haven't heard this song in a very long time. It does have a catchy, toe tapping, upbeat melody.

I'm guessing the two singers had a clue, but it appears Mr. Welk is clueless.

The Lawrence Welk show is a pretty innocuous and innocent show, I'm not surprised this type of arrangement would be made with not a bash of an eyebrow.

Oh, LW was a pretty hep dude. Dig this tribute to the Velvet Underground, at a time when most mainstream TV shows wouldn't play such material -
