I saw Eric at his worst in the late 70s and he was terrible. Fortunately for me, Muddy Waters opened the show, and he was great. What was so sad was that I was with a friend that is one of the finest guitar players I know and who was heavily influenced by Clapton, and the look of let down on his face was something I'll never forget as watched his hero stumble through the set. Truthfully my friend could have got up on that stage and took over for Clapton both vocally and on guitar and would have lit the place up, yes he's that good! So just imagine what was going through his mind as Clapton blew it, song after song. Clapton's performance was so bad that night in Salt Lake City (Salt Palace) the he mentioned that night in his autobiography!
