couple different light angles...got the bindings on the fingerboard this afternoon.
I am not 100% sure, but I don't think I'm going to do any inlay on this guitar. Also, on the headstock purflings, I put a .003/.004" piece of white purfiling on each side of the b/w/b purfling (which is b/r/b)...I did this so that the two black strips in the main purfling layup would be revealed in the back drop of the ebony headstock overlay. Otherwise the black pieces would just blend in and it'd look like one single piece of "red" (bloodwood) purfling. Kevin. |

The side liners are in and sanded glass smooth. I got the ufb in and the fingerboard overhang block installed.
On this Modified SJ model its important that this portion of the guitar is rock solid because of the adjustable neck. Forces are changed when the fingerboard tongue or overhang is not glued in this area. All that force is redirected to the front face of the headblock, with the neck "pushing" (being "pulled" by the strings) laterally back towards the bridge. All the force is applied here at this front edge. There is also the normal twisting force applied to the headblock. I have to be honest, I was a little nervous about doing this, but I did my 100Ibs concrete block test on this. It didn't budge, didn't even sag, whew...I didn't even hear a creeking or a crack. Its literally rock solid. Another secondary reason for all this rigidity is that the two plates, the top plate and the back plate, can now be manipulated much differently than any traditional design simply because they are relied on less to share in this load. Hope you enjoy. Kevin. Last edited by KevinLPederson; 08-02-2014 at 02:51 PM. Reason: spelling |

...and I got the cut away binding on today (I'll clean up the sides closer to finish). Back strip will have a similar "vibe". I really like this!!
I'm really loving the chocolate ebony sides/back too... Got the top glued onto the sides too. On this model its top on first, back on second. Kevin. |

Since I got the top glued on, I was able to work on getting the neck set today.
Once this is set up, then I can put the back on. Kevin. |

I wouldn't have the guts to go anywhere near that concrete block!

got the end graft in. I want to give a shout out to the Somoygi boys. I don't know which of them originated it (if they did), but they popularized it. But like most things I see, I'll start to put my own vision or twist on it.
Hope you like it. Kevin. Last edited by KevinLPederson; 08-06-2014 at 12:20 PM. |

yesterday I got this neck set. It took me part of the day before and much of the forenoon of yesterday to get it set up. But once set up its a breeze to get on and off. With each one I find it getting quicker and easier to do the install.
I can get the back on today, possibly some binding and then it will be onto the finish dept. Looking forward to another long day in the shop. Kevin. |

got it 95% ready for finish. Couple things to do yet, then I'll send it off to the finisher (me ).
I've been tapping on this top and back a lot today while sanding it. Its a jumper. I am really looking forward to hearing this guitar. I really thought out the "recipe" to this build. I want to see what the cedar top adds to this recipe. I wasn't going to do a bevel on this model, and it will be optional on the builds. But I decided to do a Laskin/Ryan hybrid bevel. The Laskin part is on the front, and the Ryan part is on the rear side. I like it. The macassar is looking outstanding too. No side sound holes on this one. I can tell this is going to be a boisterous guitar. The back/side/body is low dampening and very reflective. So its going to have some nice tone. Its kind of "classical" looking. Kevin. |

Kevin, I think you get the award for most thoroughly testing the stability of your guitars. That's incredible - 100lbs!
