Yes, specially if you want to run 2 speakers. It's a known phenomenon that "louder sounds better" (search up "loudness wars" and put the kettle on). I would suggest it may be there is little or no quality difference in your sound (until you get to clipping which is generally best avoided), despite what your ears might seem to be telling you, that would not be the case if you fed into both outputs and just turned it up.

Your audience almost certainly will not care.

After years of experimenting on a budget I have learned to use the system as it was designed and concentrate on singing in tune.

If it is a rotary (knob) control, then 12 o'clock or '0' (typical marking). If it is a slide fader, then there will be a hash mark labeled '1' with - (minus) numbers below and + (plus) numbers above it.
