My ownership has included SE and PRS levels and on the Fender side Squier through Am. Dlx. Fender. They can all be great, the SE PRS have superb setup at square one.

You should find out his tastes and remember that a little money spent at a shop for proper setup will make a guitar like the Fender good if it's not set up well to start.

I don't know about your market place but most areas have a shop where they have good used instruments set up well and/or somebody to do that for you.

I would agree about avoiding the Floyd if possible.

Though I have no experience with a PRS, I recommend the Strat (I own one) because they are well made, versatile, easy to work on and easy to find parts for (thus making them easy and fun to mod and customize).
