Clip on tuner help for capo user...
Just getting back into the music scene after a VERY long time and there are so many new little gizmos out there.
I'm seeking a clip-on tuner that will allow me to easily tune in multiple capo positions. Thanks in advance! |

I use the Peterson strobe tuners. They are quick, accurate and easy to use once you get used to it. It has sweetened tuning which compensated for the guitar, DADGAD and multiple tunings as well as about 100 functions you probably won’t need but it’s accurate to 0.01% rather than 1% like other cheaper tuners. I paid about $50 It seems like a lot but I have 12 guitars and I’ve used the tuner about 5-6x a day for at least 6 or 7 years. That’s money well spent to me.

You might also want to consider one that doesn't have to be removed before putting the guitar back in its case (case, guitar, and tuner dependent, and also dependent on whether you use the case or not). For example a low profile tuner that sticks out from the back of the headstock, that you can easily see while playing is good (instead of my mongo tuner that gets in the way).

Intellitouch has a combination tuner/capo - just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks all. OK. The Intellitouch capo-tuner appears to do what I desire.
Perhaps, I'm misunderstanding the other clip-ons. Will they detect that, for example, that I'm capo'd on the 5th fret and the notes to be tuned are A, D, G etc...??? |

I have a Snark that tunes up to 4 capo positions.

Yes. All they do is detect the vibration and tell you what note you're sounding. It's up to you to know what the proper note should be in any position. Then you tune with the capo on accordingly.

I never use it - I just do what 619TF suggests in his post above. In practice, I doubt anyone would ever need to remember what the note should be - you’d almost always just be ‘tweaking’ the Capoed tuning, so you’d be very close to the right note and it would show on the tuner. That’s my experience anyway. The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

90% of the time I just use my mobile phone and an app. This even though all three of my guitars have clip-on tuners! Of those my favorites are the TC Polytune clip and as of late even more so the Fishman FT-2. I like the FT-2 because it's small, light but robust but my favorite feature is the tuner turns on when you rotate the tuner up and turns off when you push it back. So no buttons to push.

That's what I thought. The clip-on tuner doesn't know or care that you are capo'd up or not. It just detects the vibration and tells you what note it is (or if it's sharp or flat from that note).

I know they get some hate but I love the red snark tuner. It reads the notes no matter where my capo is and lets me tune them pretty well.

I myself haven't used it; I use a TC Unitune. But if I had to store a capo and a clip-on tuner on the headstock, It could get cluttered up there.

I use a TC Polytune (or the Unitune) and never have had an issue when I am using a capo. The Peterson Strobo Clip is also excellent. I use a yoke-style capo (Elliott or Heritage) and find them accurate and easy to adjust. Capo placement can make a difference from guitar to guitar and player to player. I usually tweak a bit depending on the key and the chords that I am using.
