Rosewood has a decidedly bass response, mahogany has a decidedly treble response, in my experience. There are plenty in both categories.

If you are looking at a guitar that you are considering, don't let wood get in the way. Because you asked the question, I'm assuming you are one of the zillions that are not in the famous category, and just want a good guitar that you can play and be proud of. Nothing to be ashamed about Indonesian Rosewood, and I"m betting you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and EI or Braz. (other than looks..) You like it? Get it.

Im not in the process of buying or selecting a guitar....
i just wanted to know about the sound quality of that
wood species since i have never seen it before,, granted those differances would be subtle.

A term like "Indonesian Rosewood" could mean many things. As far as I know there is no wood being offered in the industry under that moniker, so it is hard to say anything about it until the term can be related with a genus that some of us have actually built with.

This is a term that is usually used for plantation grown Indian Rosewood, it is often sold at exotic lumber stores. It typically has wider grain and coloring is more of a pale brown. I'm under the impression it's the same species but just not as nice as the Indian Rosewood that's normally seen on guitars.

I bought some about 15 years ago and made a guitar around the same time. It worked, smelt and sounded just like you would expect an Indian Rosewood guitar would.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Default Indonesian RW

Hi All,
I've done some research on Indo Sonokeling RW. It was hard to find info at first, but what I learned is that it is real RW grown on a plantation. It has more of a ribbon grain than the tight grain in the wild.

Does anyone know anything about the tonal and quality differencecs? Does the presence of sapwood affect either of these, and if so, in what way?

Thanks,
Kats
