I saw those for the first time the other day. Pretty impressive. Cost wise they run triple the cost of student cellos, and etc. But if they meet the needs of concert musicians, well, what a breakthrough!!

I heard a celloist play a carbon fiber cello that was not much more than a stick. It had to be amplified. Sounded pretty good to my untrained ears.

Of course, cellophane and a comb sound good to me...

My hope is to purchase a CA OX sometime this year. I love the way they look, play, and, most importantly, sound.

There's no poll option for me. I already have a CF guitar, I'm very happy with it, and I have no immediate plans of getting another.

I've considered going carbon-only, but I like the variety that wood provides. And wood looks a lot prettier than carbon fiber.

I own a Rainsong WS-1000. Great addition to my Taylors. It is taken into conditions that my Taylors might be damaged.

I didn't vote in the poll. At present I have no plans to purchase a carbon fiber guitar in 2010. However, at the right price I would grab a 12 string and/or OM Rainsong.

That's the way I voted, but not exactly my views. I've played some CA guitars that made me smile. They're pretty much bullet (and climate) proof.

I still prefer wood for guitars, but I believe carbon guitars have their place.

I didn't vote - the option I would have selected would be "I've auditioned them and decided they're not for me".

To be fair, I tried only the CA models - the dread-type and the om-type. Both were nice - sounded fine, no complaints. They were heavier than wood, but not significantly.

My issue was price. The places I want to take a 'camp' guitar have these hazards: wet/humid, hot/sun, impact/dropping/stepped on, and theft.

For wet and hot (or very cold) the CFs shine - best option out there imho.

For impact or dropping hazards, very good to excellent.

For being stepped on, well, not sure. Not that my horses usually are free to roam where I leave anything sitting out, but this relatively low-likelihood risk would be better than wood by far but maybe not immune.

And theft? Just as susceptible as any wood guitar.

So, my solution was to buy an inexpensive but decent (solid top) Alvarez entry model - close to 10% of the price of the CA. If something damages or removes the Alvarez, I can afford to replace it. Not so easily the CA. And the Alvarez (all mahogany btw) sounds and plays fine. Or, at least I thought so. My fingers around the elk hunt camp fire this year felt 3 sizes too big (20 degrees F away from the fire; 80 degrees F toward the fire...) and I could hardly play much at all anyway. Guitar shows no signs of being affected by the weather extremes btw.

Cheers,

rr

I doubt it. My wife has never heard of carbon fiber guitars.

I do both -- I originally bought my Silver Creek(s) as beaters. But I find that the Cargo is a better beater. And it's a better travel guitar. And I don't think twice about leaving it in the car. Heck, I can even play it in the car due to its small size and short scale.

I still enjoy my Silver Creek beaters, though. "Both" is a good solution.

I wonder what a carbon fiber bridge plate would sound like, or carbon fiber braces?

I abstained, but would have voted for:
"I want to like carbon fiber guitars, but I just haven't been impressed."
I LOVE the idea of an acoustic guitar that's tougher than my Telecaster (which survived being licked by flames, then thrown out of a third story window by firefighters and lost in a pile of ash and debris for a month in the middle of winter.)

BUT, I was really unimpressed with the sound of the ones I've tried (all CA). The Cargo's tone felt really imbalanced to me, and not at all pleasing.

My other hangup is their looks. The black/red/green finishes just don't do it for me, and I don't dig the weird body shapes. I'm no purist, but I want people to pay attention to my music, not my weird guitar.

Finally, I don't like the sound of UST pickups, and would like to use my Baggs M1A. But if I got a carbon guitar, I'd want it for travel, and most of the travel guitars seem to have non-traditional soundholes that aren't compatible with a soundhole pickup.

Not quite an option in your poll---I have auditioned several carbon guitars and keep coming very close to buying one....
