Default Martins

Want to know more information and thoughts about the new Martin SC-13E, with Koa Veneer back and sides. Comments on the veneer aspect of a guitar.

We are safe to assume they used a veneer because they wanted to keep the cost down. As to why, I think it's because they want it to compete with similar Taylors in that pricing area. Solid Koa would've put the price point higher than they wanted, but they liked the looks of the guitar with a Koa veneer on it.

I've been wanting a concert body Taylor CE but I will gladly investigate this new Martin as well.

What do you want to know about it? The veneer is pretty, but it's pretty plywood.

... and, what's nice for a live-performance guitar, whether veneered-Koa or any other back-and-sides wood, is it helps withstand the rigors of the road and any drunks delicately pirouetting into the stage.

I guess what I am asking is, would the veneer hold up just like a laminate or would a person be looking down the road to replacing it?

I'm really looking into this guitar, long scale but 13 fret neck. I'm loving everything about this guitar I have read about except really wondering about the veneer aspect. I am currently looking at a Taylor 414CE, just having trouble with the brightness of Taylors.

The veneer is the outermost layer of the laminate. Laminates are usually stronger than solid wood, especially in terms of resisting cracking and warping. If you like the tone, you're golden.

Some veneered furniture has held up for hundreds of years. I have a guitar from the 1800's that is rosewood veneered on spruce. If kept under the same conditions as a solid wood guitar it should hold up as well.
