Well, I'm happy to be an honorary member for now...I intended to get one at the end of the year if I shift some CDs at gigs etc.
I played one that I would have swapped bodyparts I have in duplicate for....it was that good, it just sang to me. It was a Jumbo but I don't recall the model,if I even asked, I think it was Sycamore or some other light colored wood, but it was so thick and throaty, like Lowden tone, but almost the kind of smoothness you get from classicals on the bass strings, but across the whole guitar,up the 'board and across the strings....just amazing. I hope I can get one before they are "discovered" and the prices go up!

Add AGFer Feste to that list, DrDavid. And while the handshake will be a cool thing, do we really need the Tartan?!?
I've not played an Italian-topped McIlroy, and now I'm extremely curious. I must say, though, that Dermot does something with cedar that I've heard no one else (except perhaps George Lowden) attain. Amazing for fingerstyle. |

Maybe we should have a signature Irish whiskey rather than a handshake!

Feste duly added to the ranks of CoM. Also AGF member nobo.
Here's the updated roster: deemcilroy (!) deepnback dmcginnis DrDavid Feste GibsonGuy Kurt nobo paul84 t1m CoffeeGuitar (honorary) martinedwards (honorary) Rick Jones (honorary) "Honorary" means a great admirer of McIlroys, but not a current owner. Please suggest additions/corrections to the list !! And Kurt, I totally agree with you about McIlroy cedar tops. (Now then, you've got to get your head around the tartan. Just think of the design possibilities, not to mention the spiffy fashion statement.) ..

Actually, we could stipulate that the handshake may only be attempted after liberal exposure to the whiskey. ..

Add me to the list...
Hi all!
You can add me to the CoM. I liked the A25 (#90) I bought back in 2002 so much that I ordered an A30c (#270) back in 2005. They are truly exceptional guitars. I'm very fond of the A30, but I'll second the comment about Dee's ability to pull magic out of a cedar top. I've not heard another guitar that has the character or pull of the A25. Eight years on, I still lose track of time when I sit down to play it and haven't been tempted by GAS in I don't know how long. Cheers, Jeff |

I think billv posted some comments on McIlroy guitars in the past....he might be a good addition to the list.

I owned two McIlroys in the past (Cedar/Walnut and Cedar/Mahogany) and I can safely blame Dermot's creations for getting me into lutherie. I owned mine over 6 years ago and I would think he is a better builder now. But even back then when he had only recently started his own business (he used to work for Lowden before he built his own), I think he was building very special instruments.

With that glowing comment you've earned your way right onto the CoM "honorary" list. Congratulations. I know it's a great status to have achieved. And thanks, dMcG, for mentioning Billv. Clearly, he too deserves inclusion on the "honorary" list. As well, I've added taz2822 and Surreal McCoy to the main roster. So without further ado, here's the updated CoM roster: deemcilroy (!) deepnback dmcginnis DrDavid Feste GibsonGuy jeff.willner Kurt nobo paul84 Surreal McCoy taz2822 t1m Billv (honorary) CoffeeGuitar (honorary) martinedwards (honorary) Rick Jones (honorary) Simon Fay (honorary) "Honorary" means a great admirer of McIlroys, but not a current owner. Please keep providing suggested additions/corrections to the list !! ..

Tartan
We may need Dee to weigh in on this, but according to the English Wikipedia, Mcilroys were a subset (sept) of the Grant family clan in the Scottish Highlands. If that is Dee's lineage, here is the Grant tartan that would be appropriate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Grant) I think.

Now we just need to have Dermot verify the authenticity of the heritage, and then we can make up a sample outfit of that tartan to send to Kurt for him to pose for some modeling photos. (Don't forget to include copious quantities of the official libation.) ..

For what it is worth to the CoM, there is an A25 (cedar over walnut) listed on craigslist for a very good price:
http://lansing.craigslist.org/msg/1759995770.html If I had the money I would go after it...but alas, even if I sold my two other guitars I would fall short...I guess I am destined to only have one McIlroy for the time being. BTW, has anyone in the CoM ever played or owned one of Dee's mando-gazoookis? Dave
