There's really no WRONG way to hold a pick, but, given your own goals, you may want to change... certainly, having tension in your picking hand is not a good thing... and just to clarify, your picking "hand" has very little to do with strumming, save for holding the pick...
Check out the Gear Page; go to the playing and technique sub-forum and look at the EXTENSIVE article that Tuck Andress wrote on "holding a pick"... Tuck goes DEEP on every different style of holding a pick; the pluses and minuses and a lot minutiae about all things "pick holding". I found it interesting that he felt George Benson had "the perfect way" to hold a pick... whatever, it's a terrific article and will give you many options from which to choose... Good luck! Should be fun to find a new method and go for it...
