There's really no WRONG way to hold a pick, but, given your own goals, you may want to change... certainly, having tension in your picking hand is not a good thing... and just to clarify, your picking "hand" has very little to do with strumming, save for holding the pick...

Check out the Gear Page; go to the playing and technique sub-forum and look at the EXTENSIVE article that Tuck Andress wrote on "holding a pick"... Tuck goes DEEP on every different style of holding a pick; the pluses and minuses and a lot minutiae about all things "pick holding". I found it interesting that he felt George Benson had "the perfect way" to hold a pick... whatever, it's a terrific article and will give you many options from which to choose...

Good luck! Should be fun to find a new method and go for it...

Tried searching but all the links to the article on The Gear Page are dead. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong article?

Did you actually go to the Forum and look there? You should be able to browse around as a guest, without signing up... it's thegearpage.net ....

I just looked on Playing and Technique and it's on page three... posted by Ed DeGenaro.
