The VP must have been the one I read so many good things about. I think the one at MacNichol's was the Legacy Raw. Thanks for the tip, I'll watch for a VP to come through.

Dave, I don't know that the VP is any better than a new vintage voiced Legacy. What I would look for is a high gloss model. I think the raw finish can sound a bit metallic (which might be what you were hearing). If you can try out a Legacy (either vintage or regular) with the high gloss finish, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
