I will let you know when I make a mistake and see how I feel about it. Thanks for sharing.

Darn, you passed the magic number of 5000 without us realizing. Happy post-a-lot there Bruce. It is well appreciated.

I am almost sure to build another 12 fret guitar or 3, in which case the "mistake" will come into its own nicely. It is a misappropriation of time, not an actual loss.

Before the day is over I will put what I expect to be the final coat of varnish on the JB-15 tuc/Italian. I am using the 50/50 mix of Ace and Murdoch that I used on the Schoenberg, and it goes on a bit thinner than I am used to, though it dries considerably faster.

I will also put the first coat of varnish onto the "Tree" 00, which you can hopefully see right here and now with the sealcoat I just applied. No porefiller for this one.

Here's the first coat of oil varnish. Can you see any difference?

I see the Artisan show is coming up next week, and I am going to miss it. Can't afford the time to hit them all, but it does look like it will be a good one.

Yesterday, due to the fiddle contest, I didn't have time to put a coat on the 00. I hate to miss a day, but missing two days really isn't okay, so despite this being my "family day" I did get one on today.

I used an unknown burl for the head plates. it is a very delicate pattern and a bit darker than the "tree", so I expect it will look conservative when done, yet hold up very well under closer scrutiny. I used it on both sides of the head as well as the heel cap. Here you see it with just one coat of varnish and in direct sunlight.

Got the third coat onto the 00 today, looks the same in photograph, so I didn't take one.

I am sending photos of wood to my next customer, who we will call "Ben", mostly cuz that's his name. I wonder if he'll be happy with one of these rough sawn backs? Would you?

Today I put the 6th coat on the "Tree" 00, and then I rehearsed with my Swing trio "the Coots" (added a sax/trombone guy, Gene, a month ago), and then I buffed out the JB-15. I expect to assemble the neck to the body tomorrow.

I remember a thread in some forum or other a few years back where knowledgeable people said BRW doesn't really show much medulary ray display. I suspect they thought this mostly because actual quarter sawn BRW is rarer than you might think. Medulary display only shows up strongly in most woods when they are within a couple of degrees of true quarter. I offer these two pictures of the buffed head plates on this JB-15. The back plate is truly quartered, the head plate nearly so. The medulary display resembles flame.

I put the JB-15 together last night before retiring, and may get as far as gluing on the bridge today!

Smile Beautiful indeed!

That second shot of the Tree back with more finish made the guitar bigger! Haha

The head plate with the wacky burl is maybe my fave ever.

Glad to see your herds increase!

Bruce that back is really pretty. The sparkle that curly maple or sycamore provides next to that curly back strip whose color matches so well is vey artistic.
