This is where I sing the praises of the Alvarez Yairi DY-76. The action & tone are superb. Used examples can be found fairly cheaply.

Almost a mirror image of me, except I got my F-212 at 17, I'm also 72, so it's been my companion for 55 years!

At the risk of overstating what's been said. Guild. I've owned other 12s, Martin D-12-20 and an Ovation, played lots others. Wouldn't consider any other brand.

I love a good 6-string guitar, but I also love a good 12-string. I own a Guild F512. My YouTube channel has a lot of 12-strings songs on it. Here is my 12-string playlist, if you are interested.
Glennwillow, that’s some very enjoyable playing! When you bust out your finger picks it really stands out.
I have owned an old laminate Takamine and currently have a Taylor 562. I had a Yamaha 12 string that was a better guitar than the Tak- but I preferred the feel and story of the tak and sold off the Yamaha 12 to a friend.
I play a mix of standard scale and short scale 6 strings, the Taylor short scale 12 string is helpful for my hands. If Im playing anything requiring barre chords
My hands get tired too soon on the 14 freters.

I've always wanted to try a Guild. I've never gotten around to it.

I once had a small body Gibson 12-string. I wish I still had it. I've never seen another one.

I have several Martin 12-string guitars.:
  1. My D12-28 is what I consider The standard for a Martin 12-string..
  2. My D-12-35 50th anniversary has a great sound.
  3. My 12-string Pete Seeger Baritone is unique.
  4. My Grand J12-16GTE is reasonably priced and sounds great.
  5. My D12X1AE is a great campfire guitar.

You heard right. I think Guilds are at the top of the 12-string heap.

Another fan of Guild acoustic 12 strings here .
My first Guild 12 string was an early 80s cherry D25-12 dread (a la Tom Petty), after that a 1974 F112 natural mini-Jumbo.
Then came a mid 90s "iced tea" burst JF30-12 and finally a 1979 F512 natural.

The only other 12 string I have a hankering for is an old slope shoulder Gibson B45 from the early 60s.

I'm not so much asking about specific models, but rather which brands put out a high quality 12-string.
I would reconsider Taylor.I think their strength is in 12 strings.Even the lower priced Taylor 150E is a very decent, easy playing instrument.

If you are able to handle a heavy guitar with a substantial neck, then a Guild Jumbo would offer the best sound.

I have owned several Martin 12 strings each of which I enjoyed playing.Thier DX 12 strings were not my favorite however.

Right now I have a Martin D12-28.Great sound and the main thing for me is the short scale.

The Japanese made Takamine 12 strings are also very good and are at a decent price point.

Enjoy the hunt!

Gabe

If you are serious about acoustics, a 12 string will really enhance your experience.

One thing - look for a used one. A lot of players buy a 12 string and get sick of them or have a hard time playing one. Finding a deal on a used 12 string, then make sure you have it set up is good strategy. Have fun and good luck!
agree on all if the above!

Thank you Cliff!

The Taylor 562 is terrific 12-string, I think!

I really like my Takamine GJ72CE 12 string. It gets played a minimum of once per week. But I am rotating through 4 other acoustics.

If you really want a high-end great sounding 12 string, you’ll have a hard time beating a Santa Cruz - of course, you’ll also have a pretty hard time finding one, but if you do . . .
