So what would the 4th guitar be? If I may be so bold... a Gibson 335?

Play, own, or consider "at some point:"

Agree on Martin style 18 and Gibson J-45 !

For the 3rd slot, you should absolutely spoil yourself with at least 1 boutique at least once... don't care which one, but at least see what they offer: Santa Cruz (my personal #1), Collings, Bourgeois, H&D, and Goodall.

Well, here's my take:

Gibson Les Paul
Fender Strat
Martin OM28

This should handle just about everything you need.

Martin D-28, any of Martin's several versions.
Westerly factory Guild D-55 - blessedly, honorably, and and to their credit, Guild has no confusing "variations'.
Taylor's Big Baby

If electrics aren't forbidden here, then my 4th would be Gibson electric, ES-335.

There are none. Ask a group of 100 guitar players and there will absolutely be some overlap over which ones they might say you should have, but in the end, the only guitars you should have are ones that you like. Even if everyone else puts them down, or even if everyone else likes them.

after many years, many Taylors, many Martins, and a whole slew of other brands, i've arrived with the following and really like the tone variation and fit of all of them.

Yamaha LS36 takes care of my rosewood needs

Gibson AE LG2 takes care of my mahogany needs

Larrivee T-40 takes care of my xtra small size needs

Fender AO 70's Tele takes care of my tele needs(although i'm really eyeing one of the 70th Anniversary Broadcaster Blackguard Blondes also)

PRS CE 24 takes care of my humbucker needs

Squire tele set up for slide takes care of my glass bottle needs

Ben Woods BWSM cedar/rosewood flamenco takes care of my nylon needs

(wouldn't mind having one of the new Martin SC13e models take up residence at my house-i love this guitars playability, access, and fit)

is that three yet..............
