Default 2017 Taylor 314CE now 312ce.

A used one came up locally that the owner claims was played less than 1 hour and is in mint condition. He is the original owner and never learned to play.

It is a 2017 and from looking at the pics it seems practically new.

Did the 2017 have V bracing or is this fairly new?

Anything I should be looking for?

Is the Taylor factory warranty transferable?

If it is in the condition he claims, will probably offer around $1K for it.

Comments are appreciated.

PS..never owned a Taylor before and a think this would be an economical way for entry.

I don't believe that the factory warranty is transferrable. I'm pretty certain that a 2017 model would not have V bracing (which IMO is more often a plus than a minus).

It's always best to have someone knowledgeable in guitars to help you inspect a used instrument if you don't know how to do it yourself. But the main things to look for are bridge separation, bellying behind the bridge, twisted neck, worn frets (which shouldn't be a case here). Next you'd want to make sure that the neck relief could be brought into spec. If you can play, then check for string buzz on any string on any fret, and if there is any determine what's causing it. After that you should be good, except if the guitar needs a setup.

Good luck.

In 2017 Taylor was still using their "performance" bracing, not V bracing.

I'd say 2017 was the best year for Taylor 300 series and up. x braced, relief route, performance bracing to bring out more bass, and es2 pickups. I don't think the 314 has performance bracing though. My 2018 314e doesn't have it.

$1K is a good price either way. Good luck!

Thanks. Agree about the bracing. From the samples I have heard have, I prefer the X bracing.

Taking a straight edge as well to check the top.

So..I played the 314CE and it was a marvelous guitar and in immaculate condition.

However...I did not purchase it.

The Grand Auditorium size was to close in size (16" bout) to my J-185 and as much as I really liked the 314CE , I would prefer a smaller body and short scale for my last guitar.

Enter -the 312ce.

I have never owned a Taylor before and as the 314 workmanship impressed me, I plan to order a new 312ce (14 fret) tomorrow.

I'm sure a 312CE will be nice, but I highly recommend you first try a 12 fret GC - they are really something quite special. I have owned a 2015 712e 12 fret from new and it's not going anywhere!

I agree.
I A/B'd a 2017 324e and a 2018 V Class 324e... last year at a shop in Manchester NH. I preferred the 2017 X- performance braced one and bought it. Better bass, warmer (and overall balance) and unexpectedly the neck was a little chunkier - not quite as low profile - which I like.

I strongly second this recommendation!

Bought an X-braced 612ce 12-fret from an AGF member a few months back and it has quickly become one of my favorites, quite possibly THE favorite (ssshhhh ... my 314 might be listening)!

Just to add to your growing uncertainty (because of us) I will third the 12 fret model. I have a 512e 12 fret that I absolutely love, nice rich sound and easy to hold and play
