I can't comment on that 50th edition but I think the FGX5 is more of the poor man's D-18. I was wanting a D-18 but had to fund it with another guitar I sold. At the end of the day I am perfectly happy with the Yammy. I am a guy who loves a great value for my money. I think you will be very happy with an FGX5.

“A poor man’s D-18” struck a chord with me. I own a FS5 Red Label and it is indeed a poor man’s 00/000-18...but its tone is definitely comparable. MIJ guitars are like US-made guitars...they generally do have a certain standard to how they are built.

Just my 2 cents.

Having said that about MIJ guitars. I just have to have a US-made guitar so in December last year, I got a new Martin 00-15M.

Can’t agree more. I would take an FS5 over the Martin any day of the week.

Just on the talk of FGX5, what amp would you recommend to use if I did plug in?
I currently have a fishman mini I use not very frequently with my a nylon string guitar but ideally I'd have one amp good for both

What's wrong with using the Fishman mini for the FGX5? Are you needing something bigger and louder? If not, the mini is a great little amp.

I've just arrived home with a new FS5 .

After investigating it for months and today taking it for a test run in the store, I just had to have it. So playable and compared to what I was used to, the tone felt like it was made in Heaven. Love the case, too.

Now ... how to explain to my wife where it came from .

I remember reading about your Yamaha MIJ custom made guitar accidentally going to another customer. They gave you a good deal and you’re now waiting for your LL56...

Hope you get it soon!

Thanks Cool555!

It was to a large extent your enthusiastic posts about this guitar that got me started along this road. So you can take the blame .

I've been practicing the last hour or two since I brought it home and the more I use it the more perfectly matched to me it seems!

Bonding is indeed taking place .

Haha...good one Nicholas. I don’t mind taking the blame.

I think because the Red Label was new and not easily available in May last year. My NGD post had a lot of views that surprised me.

Glad to hear that you really like it!

I got my saddle replaced with FMI and setup by Jarvis and it really rings now.
My factory bone saddle was quite loose & I only noticed it during the string change.
Good to check when you are changing strings

That’s me!

It’s one those dream guitars for me, so I’m pretty pumped to get it. What is it they say? Good things come to those who wait, or something like that 4 or 5 months to go...

I too noticed that the saddle just fell out on mine when changing the strings. I have never had that happen.

Congrats on your FS5. I have not wanted a dread in years until this FGX5 and the FG800 I acquired in recent months and I can't tell that the size of a dread gives me any problems but I will always wonder if the FS5 would have been just as acceptable to me as the FG5. I just didn't have the luxury of playing either one before buying so I bought the FGX5 blindly and couldn't be happier. I wanted to err on the side of the FG having a boomier bass.

If the saddle is very loose it will affect the tone and may even cause damage to the bridge due to the tilt. You can consider changing the saddle 🙂
