Could someone talk me out of an SJ-200 Gibson?
I stare at these all the time. I know it's just a guitar. They're all just wood and tension and strings, it won't change my life, it won't be better than the others.
But I want one. Can you talk me out of it? Comfort me that it's not the most wonderful guitar ever? .................or is it????

Sorry but looking at your signature it’d be a great add in terms of the diversity of your portfolio...

It will change your life.
It has a soul of its own. It is way more than just a guitar. You cannot live without it. ...seriously.

If it’s affordable, buy it. I would, no questions asked.

If you really want to be talked out of one, they often leave the factory w/ low saddle height. Gibson lack of consistency can also be an issue.
Like you, I really like their looks - think Bob Dylan Nashville Skyline cover. |

I've always wanted one, and if you got the dough you go to the show. However, look far and wide to find a good one as I have played more than a few that didn't blow my socks off to say the least. Good luck, and don't forget the pics.

Anyone with a handful of guitars or more is missing an anchor unless they have a Gibson. They are wonderful. Mine is a J-45 (2012), and its coming with me. All you have to do is open the case and it will take you away for hours, sometimes days.
One prerequisite though, you have to be a good person, otherwise you can't keep telling yourself you deserve it. |

I probably sound like a broken record in this forum. But if you're going to add a Gibson acoustic to your collection get the Advanced Jumbo. It laps the SJ-200 in tone by a large margin, imo. I'm just doing what you asked. The SJ-200 is NOT the most wonderful guitar ever. Not even top 5 in Gibson's lineup of acoustics, imo.

You came to a forum of guitar addicts to get talked out of buying a guitar?
Yeah, that'll work. Seriously, try some and see. You may talk yourself out of or into it. Just don't blame us when you take one home. |

I bought a '92 Red Ferguson that was quiet, dull and lifeless. The best players in town couldn't believe it either. It was at my luthiers for 2 weeks while some of his clientele played it.
Luckily I sold it for what i paid, $2,400, but I had to drive a 100 miles to deliver. Need the Wednesday builds for good Gibsons. I have 3, I love the good ones. |

I have a 2017 Gibson Montana Custom Shop Limited SJ-200 Western Classic and it is an amazing guitar, but it has Thermally aged Adirondack Red Spruce quarter sawn top and rosewood back and sides instead of the traditional maple.

I always wanted one....... until I tried one.
I tried it against a J45 and there was no comparison in my hands. The J45 was much, much better. I thought the J200 might have been a bad example but the guy in the shop played it and it sounded fantastic. Conclusion was this is a great guitar but just not for my style so I'll continue to admire them but no longer have the urge to own one. |
